World oil and gas reserves by country

The findings are surprising, and go against conventional wisdom that Saudi Arabia and Venezuela hold the world’s largest oil reserves. The U.S. Energy Information Administration, for example, pegs Venezuela’s oil reserves at 298 billion barrels, the largest in the world. The state-run oil and gas company Gazprom dominates upstream gas production in the country. The company accounts for about 80% of Russia’s total natural gas output and controls more than 65% of proven gas reserves in the country. However, the development of this huge reserves has taken a backseat due to political unrest over the past few years. A traditional and leading oil exporter in the globe, Saudi Arabia is also among the lead gas producers today. It is believed to be the home of the biggest natural gas reserves in the gulf region. Reliable findings indicate the country has natural gas reserves that are over 7 trillion cubic meters. Venezuela holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves. The country’s proven oil reserve as of January 2013 stood at 297.57 billion barrels accounting for about one fifth of the world’s total proven oil reserve.
